Know what you want before you start

Have you ever heard that saying? You need to know what you want before you get started, but not really sure what that meant? I mean, you want to lose weight so you do your workout, right? But, look deeper!

Sit down and really look at what you want for yourself, your health, your finances, your career…. and start paying attention to what you are doing before you get started. Because when you know exactly what you want in all situations, you can achieve more!

Let’s take an example- your goal is to lose 10 lbs. So one thing you have to do is workout. Do you just “show up” in your workout with hopes that overtime you will lose weight? Or do you look at your workout and say – today I want to do a better job then yesterday? Do you challenge yourself? Do you push it a little harder in your workout to get a little more. Try paying attention to your workout and say, today I want to go a little longer on my run, or you want to life a little heavier then the day before. Your ultimate goal is to lose weight by working out, but knowing that you are going into to get more then just that out of it will push you a little harder in your workout. Admit it, we all got on the treadmill at sometime, just read a book, gone at a steady pace… But, why not get on it and say, I am going to go a little faster today then yesterday! It constantly challenges you to do your best!

Let’s try another example, if you want to lose weight would you go into a store and just “shop” until you figure out what is for dinner and hope it meets that weight loss goal of yours? Or could you stop, plan out your meals for the day/week and then create your list and THEN shop! Which result do you think will get you the best results? My guess is the one that you KNEW your outcome was to lose weight by eating right, so you sat down, planned it out and then put it into action. Your success will come quicker with a little pre-planning!

I know that in today’s world, we move so fast it seems hard to stop and plan. It takes a little more time to figure out what we really want. But, I know that when you stop just going through the motions and put your what you want first, then when you get started success will follow.

What are other things you can plan out what you want before you start?
- What if you wanted to save more money in your current paycheck. That is your goal. So, now before you get paid, you sat down wrote out a budget and planned what you were going to spend money on this week and how much you were going to set aside. Do you think this plan will help you get more money in your pocket at the end of the week?

- What if your outcome is to gain more customers for your business? Would it be great plan to figure out who exactly you want to buy your product or service before you simply throw out an ad campaign to the world? A more defined goal of who you will market to will get you better results then just tossing paper in the sky approach.

- What if your goal is to talk more to your kids? Then when you picked them up from school, do you think you could have a conversation over just listening to the radio? Or while making breakfast, you could make it fun and teach them to make pancakes with you instead of just calling them to the table when done?

I challenge you to stop and determine what your goals are, then look at how you can achieve them. I bet if you really figure out what you really want, and look at what you are already doing you can make a few adjustments to really achieve more!

What’s the right question?

Are you stuck in a rut? You know, you keep asking yourself questions like – Why can’t I lose this weight? Why is my business not growing? Why am I always broke? Why do I attract the wrong men into my life?

Do you know, one of the biggest reasons you are getting the answers to all those questions is because you are setting your mind up for looking for those answers. For example, if your question is why can’t I lose weight? You are telling your mind to look for answers like – I can’t lose weight, I am still fat, I don’t know what I am doing, I must be lazy, I must have a slow metabolism… It is looking for the answers that fit that question!

Or what if you are in a home based business and you feel it isn’t moving “fast enough”. Your questions are – Why am I not successful at this? Why am I not growing? Why am I not making the same money as so and so? The answers that will come might be – I can’t do this business? I am not good at talking to people. I am so broke. Nobody wants my product or service. She is just better at this then me.

Your questions have a negative tone to them, start catching yourself saying these kinds of questions and learn to stop that. These negative questions impact your thoughts. Your thoughts influence what your mind looks to seek as an answer. What you focus on is what you will ultimately get. So, by constantly asking the question in a negative light, the negative answers will come. The solution to the question is obvious to the mind you can’t do it or achieve it!

Instead, ask a different questions. Let’s use the same 2 examples. What do you ask about for weight loss journey? Start changing the questions to – What can I do today to help me reach my weight loss goals? What healthy foods can I cook to improve my diet and weight loss. What activity can I do with my family, kids, friends that will support us in living a healthy life. What weight loss/fitness level can I achieve in 1 week, 1 month, 6 months if I simply do this one thing? See how asking a new question can lead to your mind finding new answers? Think about it, now your mind is saying, maybe I can ride a bike today to help me reach my goals. My friends are all meeting up online to support each other through their fitness program, maybe I will join in! This website has some great recipes, I think I can print them out and save them to work on my meal plans for weight loss.

What about the questions for your business? Start asking questions like – What one thing can I do today to move my business forward? Who is one person today that I can call and share my product/service with? What do I need to learn today to make me better at this skill. What is my goal for this week, month, year in my business? What resources are currently available to help me reach my goals? All these questions spark your mind to help you look for success and solutions to get you to where you want to be! Your mind is not focused on the negative, not focused on the lack of. But, it is now focused on the success, finding a solution, looking for the how to improve, move forward, see success, see happiness… and all that leads to people being attracted to you, your services. And when that happens the money and rewards often follow.

So, I leave you today with this – take action. Start writing down all the questions that pop into your head. How did you word them? What are they asking your mind to find as an answer?

Now, re-write that question and ask it again. Keep asking it over an over or keep re-writing it. Watch the mind find a solution, a push. You are challenging it to do more, to want more, to see more! Suddenly the things you are looking for will come into your life, the answers you seek will be there, and the success will follow!

My family doesn’t support my weight loss program

Are you trying to lose weight, and you want to start a fitness program to help you reach your goals. Maybe you are happy you finally made the decision to get started. Then you run to your family, your spouse and say, I can’t wait WE are going to do this together. Or maybe you are a little nice and ask, and simple say will you do this fitness program or go to the gym with me. Of course, you immediately think they will say yes rut. I mean their family and should support you in your goals, or they may need to do it too.

But, you quickly realize your goals and hopes are not theirs. They simple don’t want anything to do with working out or maybe changing their diet. Maybe They just are not ready themselves for change.

I’m going to shout this out, DON’T LET THIS DISCOURAGE or STOP YOU!

I know exactly how you feel. My husband works hard in his day job, last thing he wants to do is workout with me after work. He really does support me, even if him saying I don’t want to workout or don’t want to eat the same things as you comes across at first as not supporting my efforts. He does want me to reach my goals, but doesn’t really “help” much in the support of doing it with me aspect.

Here are my tips, even if you feel alone and not supported.

1. Don’t let it stop you! I am repeating this because often we get discouraged and defeated before we even start. Respect their opinion, but just make a plan for your self to reach your goals and stick to it!

2. Know your WHY! Why do you want to get started. Know it, believe in it, and go for it! There is power in knowing why you want to achieve your goals. That power will get you to find a way, support, and the results you want.

3. Seek out support. Maybe a friend, a co-worker, or a groups ill be your answer.
Think of weight watchers, find a class at the gym and meet new people there. Use meetup.com to find activities in your area. Or consider an online support group like our drop a size, KickStarter group, there is power when you simply can check in with people.

4. Create your time to workout. Make sure it fits in with your family schedule. Maybe it’s before everyone gets up. Maybe it’s while your kids are at their game. Maybe your spouse can help with another chore to allow you “your time”. Find a schedule that works with you, and the rest of your life. Soon, it will become a habit and everyone will know, it’s your time to workout, and not to bother you.

5. Be creative with meals. I refuse to cook a separate meal for the family, but maybe I can make a dish and leave off a few ingredients that can be added at the end by those who want it. Maybe get in the habit of making a salad before the meal for the family, and make that your main dish. Make a smaller portion size for you of one item in the meal, but up the sizes of veggies you make for yourself. There are options, just work around it. You’d be surprised if you google an ingredient you like how you can turn it into a healthy recipe your entire family will enjoy (and may not even realize how good it is for them.) 6. Pick up a good book, it will help you stay focused to your goal. My favorite, especially if you are just starting is a book called the Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Simple read 10 pages a day. It will put your mind in the right mood to stay focused on reaching your goals!

You can do it! Don’t let your belief that your family doesn’t support you stop you. Don’t let that become your story not to get started. Don’t make it your excuse why you can’t change. Maybe use that belief to prove them wrong, you can do it.

In the end, you know as you are getting healthier, you are losing that weight, you are reaching your goals -you will become a more confident and happy person. It just happens! Your family will notice those changes, and for that they will love and support you even more.

How to get more time

In today’s world, do you seem to be running all the time. From appointment to appointment? From project to project? Then you look at what you want to do and say, I have no time? Like your day sometimes is spinning out of control? I totally feel you! I know what it is like. It creates a whole level of stress in our life that we really don’t need!

I just want to share a few tips that helped me find more time in my schedule to do the things I want to do. Just to feel more organized. I was a full time engineer working 12-14 hours a day, yet still managed to come home and run a family and a successful work from home business.

1. Carry a journal for 1 week. Up, for 1 week just carry a journal and make notes of how your day went. What activities did you do? What suddenly popped up? How did you feel after everything you do? Keep track! Make it as detailed as possible. I personally did this for 30 days using one of those calendars for an entire day broken down into 15 minute increments. I tracked everything I did. What I realized, there was much more time in the day then I thought, but I was wasting them (maybe watching tv verses a movie, a trip to the store every day verses once a week), lunch hours where I could have made a phone call to book an appointment, yet sat and played on Facebook. Or there were activities that just were not aligned with my goals and priorities. If spending time with family is a high priority, maybe I need to say no to helping a friend run an event? But, you can only figure out where you are spending your time if you truly sit down and track it for an entire week!

2. What are your goals and priorities? Really focus on what are the top 5 most important things in your life you want to achieve/do? Then look at your calendar or your journal. Ask yourself, did my activities align with my goals? If not, can you cross them off the list? Yes, it maybe SUPER hard to say no to some of the items, but if they are aligned with what you really want, it will help you become more stress free and active more!

3. Create a TO DO list. Now that you know you have a million things you have to do, write them down! At first it might just look like a total dump of the mind. Everything from paying a bill to setting a doctor’s appointment. Include all your family activities, and even things that way on your mind like cleaning the garage. Yup, your initial To Do list could be 3 pages long. I know mine was!!!

4. Prioritize your To Do List. Ok, now that you have a list, make a note. What has to be done Today, give it an A. What has to be done this week, give it a B. What has to be done this month, give it a C. What would you like to do this quarter of the year – give it a D. Keep going, sometimes it maybe 5 years out, so just make a list and start prioritizing it.

5. Pull out your calendar and schedule it. Now that you know what has to get done today and this week, add all those tasks into a calendar. Make sure they are all aligned with your priorities!!! If not, ask myself – how important is this task really to what I want to achieve??? If you start seeing conflicts arise, you can immediately start taking action on how to delegate tasks or re-arrange as necessary. Lay it out, don’t start your day/week on the fly! Knowing will immediately give you less stress!

6. Look ahead. Now that you see everything on your calendar, thing of all those tasks you want to do for the month. What can you squeeze into your schedule this week to get you a little closer to getting it done? Maybe you can dedicate an hour towards it? Giving you a little less stress at the end of the month.

7. Down time. Make sure your schedule has a little down time or me time. You can’t always take care of the needs of the family, or run a business 24/7. You will stress out. So, make sure to plan some time in the week for yourself. Maybe it’s an hour a day to workout, maybe just an appointment to get your hair/nails done. Maybe just to see a movie you have been dying to watch. But, make sure you rest up and do something for you!

8. Start each day off right. Allow 15-30 minutes to really review your calendar for the day. See what has popped up since you planned it for the week. Make necessarily adjustments right in the morning! THEN, go forward in your day and stick to your schedule! If things pop up, reschedule immediately or ask, is this really going to get me where I want? If you can say no, do it!

9. Learn to be where you are! Now that you have your priorities and goals set, your top tasks written out, and your calendar set. Then learn to really be where you are! If you are at your kid’s game, stop and pay attention! Be there! Don’t be on the phone with work, answering emails. That “work time” should be scheduled and focused already on your calendar. SHOW up and give it that Power Hour (or as scheduled) time to really focus without interruptions and get things done! You will enjoy your life more when you are doing one task at a time!!!

These are just a few tips! In an age where the internet can get you sucked in. Remember, to schedule it. Heck, I have even given myself a timer already. 15 minutes to be on Facebook and play and I am done! When the buzzer goes off, its on to what is important! I know it sounds basic or maybe hard to do. But, try it! Give it a week, or even a day a time. Learn to say now. Keep practicing. Keep making notes, what interrupted my day and how can I improve that tomorrow? I know you will be able to do it and suddenly feel so much better. Things like cooking a meal and purposely making enough to freeze for next week will suddenly start appearing to you to make your life just a little simpler!

I am a firm believer that to get what you want in life, the first thing you have to work on is yourself! I know, when I was younger, just out of school the last thing I wanted anyone to tell me was to pick up a pick and continue to learn. UGGH, right! But, after years of learning what holds me back and how to overcome them, I made self development a priority! You will always see me at seminars, conferences, reading good books, listening to audios on my iPod. I can learn so much, just by doing a few things everyday.
